Making use of your own power as a consumer

We don’t give our address books to the government to manage, so why would we want to let them store any more of our personal data? After all they can’t keep what they already have secret. Yet Jacqui Smith seems determined to introduce legislation in the UK to try to track everything we do on the phone or web.

2009 is likely to be the year that people start to fight harder against this institutional management of all our personal information. People will increasingly limit access to businesses they don’t like, while encouraging those that they do. This is the world of personal information management. Hopefully we at You Wish can encourage businesses to see that they need to change the way they interact with their customers and recognise that they need to demonstrate their value to them at all times. Certainly the recession will force most businesses to realise that they cannot take the consumer for granted any longer. Ultimately the consumer can just walk away and this is not in anyone’s interest.
